Opportunity for Personal Reflection

Part One

  • Who was your hero when you were a child?  What did you admire in them?
  • When you were growing up, who in your circle of close personal relationships was your model for what a real hero is and does?  Describe an incident that captures their heroic ways.

Make a list of their characteristics….

Part Two

  • When have you played the role of a hero? As a child; as a young adult; in your work?

Write a short description of an incident from each stage of your life that illustrates this.

  • Is there a pattern to your developing hero?  Are there themes that recur or stick in your memory?  Make a list….
  • Considering all the public, private and literary figures you have admired, what heroic aspects of these behaviours have you been able to capture as an adult?
  • What have you gained professionally from your heroic choice?  What have you sacrificed?
