Activity – Your Action Stances

The 4 Player Model

Action

Description

You are making a Move when you initiate action. It is an invitation for others to react and respond.  It can be an overt suggestion or a statement of advocacy or opinion.  If you introduce new ideas into the conversation, help shape direction, help individuals and groups to move forward, find/ put forward solutions to problems then you are making a Move.

You are making a Follow when you support another’s stance, agree with one side or another in a debate, agree to carry forward the ideas of others, help to strengthen the ideas of others, build coalitions.  A Follow action always serves to perpetuate the action already on the table.

You are making an Oppose when you challenge an action that someone else has proposed, provide a contrasting view and perspective on the subject, disagree with what others are saying, are against what is being said, offer resistance to an idea or action

You are making a Bystand when you are reflecting on actions without acknowledging agreement or disagreement.  A Bystand adds a neutral perspective, bridging competing and opposing actions, describing process rather than content, declaring the impact of a conversation on self, noticing what is going on and naming it.
